Happy Saint Paddy's Day, to all of you out there! I hope everyone is wearing the proper amount of green and otherwise enjoying this splendid day, this glorious day. Yes, Saint Patrick's Day is a wonderful day, indeed. When I was a younger man, one could say that this was my favorite day. Of course, back then I was under the misconception that my descendents were once immigrants of the Green Isle. For years, I lived under this ruse, proud of a past that was based on a misguided history. I don't know where it began, or at one point my ancestry decided to change, but all I do know is that for the whole of my formulative years and throughout my adolescence, I had been told that I was of Irish descent. I celebrated this fact as often as I could, hardly being able to contain my pride in being an Irish American. It was a culture that I absolutely loved, and still do. I looked forward to the coming of Saint Patrick's Day every year. Years later, after a brief geneological study, the truth was laid bare before me. It turns out that my ancestors were originally immigrants of the British Isle, otherwise known as Great Britain. I should have known this all along, but somehow I just couldn't see it. What a sad day it was for me to learn this. Even sadder was my lose in the pide that came around Saint Patrick's Day.
Don't get me wrong. I still enjoy this holiday, but it is no longer situated above the rest, having been relegated to join such lesser holidays as Halloween, Cinco de Mayo, and Yak Day. I feel as if I just can't celebrate it like I used to, but they do say that everyone is Irish on this day. I like to think that, as well. It is a rich and vibrant culture that we can all cherish and love. So, with all that in mind, I raise my glass of Jameson high to all of you, as I wish you a happy and blessed Saint Patrick's Day!
Erin go Bragh!
